Did you know that Sidney Lanier, the great Southern poet, spent a lot of time in Verbena and may have written some of his most famous poetry while camped in a pine thicket near the center of town? You might be surprised to learn how our now small sleepy little village was once a bustling community full of stores, doctors offices, a bank, a hotel, a train depot and more.
Verbena Alabama was designated as a National Historic District in the 1970’s. Now the Verbena Historical Society is actively seeking new members who have an interest in Verbena and in preserving its history and passing that history on to generations to come. Whether your interest is because you have personal ties to the community or you simply have a love of history itself and wish to help preserve it, membership in this organization could be just the thing for you.
Joining is easy and dues are only $25.00 per year, per person. Once you decide to become a member, just click on “Membership” in the menu at the top of the page and that will take you to our online membership application. Complete the form, click the submit button, then mail your check to the Verbena Historical Society, P.O. Box 123, Verbena, AL 36091. Join us and be sure to let your friends and neighbors know about us as well. Our new website will be here to keep you informed of what’s going on and how you can help in our efforts to meet our goals. We look forward to hearing from you. |
